VHIR offers an animal caretaker position for the Experimental Surgery Unit (ESU). ESU belongs to the VHIR pre-clinical core-facilities and their expertise are: preclinical animal models (pig, sheep and rabbit) for research and teaching purposes, anaesthesia, analgesia and resuscitation protocols and pre and post-operative animal care and welfare. ESU offers integral preclinical imaging services, ethics committee assistance, has an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system certification and Certification AAALAC - Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.
VHIR Core Facilities provide services to the scientific community to have access to specialised services of preclinical and clinical models of human diseases

JOB DESCRIPTION
Education and qualifications:
Required:
 Secondary school certificate or High school Diploma.
 Hold the accreditations according to the Ministerial Order ECC/566/2015, of 20th March and to the Directive 2010/63/EU: a+b Functions.
 Basic IT skills.

Desired:
 Knowledge of the law and ethical aspects of the use of animal experimentation.

Experience and knowledge:
Desired:
 Previous experience in management of rabbits, sheep and pigs.
 Previous experience in experimental surgeries.

Main responsibilities and duties:
Regarding the animal:
 Feeding of animals and control of fasting.
 Daily review and general maintenance and cleaning care.
 Reception and housing of new animals.
 Control of food stock.

Regarding the facility:
 Daily cleaning and disinfection of pig and sheep boxes.
 Manage of rabbit cages.
 Monitoring adequate functioning and maintenance.
 Detection and monitoring of incidences.

Regarding material and equipment:
 Preparation of surgery room according to the type of surgery.
 Cleaning, preparation and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment.
 Control, ordering and replacement of consumables.
 Preparation of costumes and clothing needed for surgery.
 Support veterinarian staff in experimental procedures and researchers’ services.

Labour conditions:
 Part-time position: 30h/week with possibility to work additional hours on weekends and public holidays (within legal limits).
 Starting date: immediate.
 Gross annual salary: Remuneration will depend on experience and skills. Salary ranges are consistent with our Collective Agreement pay scale.
 Contract: Permanent.
